Physical

Fine and gross motor skills fully develop during this stage. School-age children are typically quite active and have smooth coordinated movement. Children typically master motor skills such as bike riding and shoe tying early in these years.

Cognitive / Language

School-age children are immersed in academic learning and the social environment of their peers. Their language is fluent and varied. Issues are very important to elementary age children. They are quite concrete in their thinking and focus on the here and now rather than long-term.

Psychosocial

School age children are learning how to focus and ignore distractions. They can complete tasks with minimal instructions. They often have very high expectations of themselves. They may now lose games graciously. A sense of humor begins to develop. Children are learning the values and mores of their culture during the school-age years. Self-identity continues to grow and expand towards adolescence. Peer pressure increases in intensity.
