Physical

Adolescents begin to mature physically during this time with girls more advanced in physical development than boys. For girls, menstruation typically begins.

Cognitive / Language

Abstract thinking begins in this stage as they move from concrete thinking. Increasingly interested in larger ideas and social values. Very interested in music and peer relationships during this time.

Psychosocial

Adolescence is a time of determining a sense of self. Early adolescence especially is a time of exploration. Adolescents vacillate between independence and dependence. Mood swings are also typical.
